Eric Jensen
My artistic practice is a celebration and acknowledgment of the animist reality of the natural world. This body of work was inspired by my desire to commune with nature on a deeper level. These lands and the beings within are active participants in an interconnected web of consciousness and meaning. In places like old growth forests, river flood plains, the high alpine, and similar zones where nature still rules, we are able to witness and commune with the deep patterns of creation that exemplify themselves in the forms seen across so many different locations and scales in the land. I aim to challenge the notion that nature is an unconscious entity and instead portray it as a dynamic and intelligent force. Through this approach, I hope to push back against colonial mindsets that presently and historically objectify and idealize landscapes, reducing them to mere resources for exploitation. These attitudes have cut many of us off from our inherent ability to speak to the greater consciousness found in nature. It is in this relationship, which we can still find deep in the recesses of our hearts and souls, that true healing and understanding can take place. My work is intended to help facilitate a renewal of this relationship and my hope is that you will feel this for yourself the next time you are in the presence of the elder forms found in our natural world.
