Teresa S. Kelly
Artist Statement
The artist is distinctly drawn to color, especially the playful energy of complementary hues.
Working primarily with acrylics, oils, and mixed media, they create texture, depth, and a
compelling sense of movement in their pieces. Their art blends various techniques to capture
subjects like landscapes, birds, wildlife, and country life, all inspired by a childlike wonder and
deep love for nature.
There is often a dreamy, folksy quality to their impressionistic work, which is influenced by
masters such as Van Gogh, Monet, and Chagall. The artist embraces rough edges and “happy
accidents,” believing these elements bring character and spontaneity to each piece. The goal of
the work is to share beauty and joy, inviting viewers into vibrant, harmonious scenes that
celebrate the natural world and reflect the artist’s faith.
Background
The artist was born in Wyoming and moved to Billings, Montana, in the fourth grade. Summers
were spent in Jackson, Wyoming, while the school year was spent in Billings, Montana—offering
the best of both worlds and providing ample inspiration from diverse landscapes.
They studied art education at Montana State University–Billings and earned a Bachelor’s degree
in Liberal Studies with a minor in Art in 2000. During college, the artist actively exhibited their
work and volunteered as a docent at the Yellowstone Art Museum.
For many years, art became more of a side pursuit as the artist focused on full-time work,
periods of disability, and raising a son. Now, in the midst of a mid-life creative reset, the artist
has returned to their roots with renewed passion. They are currently creating new work,
participating in local art events, and building an online presence. They are a proud member of
the Billings Art Association.
